This is part of a weekly series of choice prompts that all my Patreon supporters get to vote on. See all the poll posts on Patreon here.

The adventure so far: You are River, a Changeling Stray that got lost, beaten, and mugged as you were traveling in the North of Nuradan. You ended up in the outskirts of the remote village of Sund, and are in desperate need for shelter and supplies. You wait for the night and try to steal something, when the same brigands attack the village! You help the townsfolk repel the intruders, and now you might have a moment to rest safely. Although part of a larger regional conflict, you decide it’s time to tackle the brigands problem together with the folks of Sund.

Two days have passed already. Your left arm still hurts, but it’s improving. Another few days and you’ll regain full mobility.

While not fully recovered yet, you have been granted a few supplies from the townsfolk. You are now geared up with some reinforced leather armor from Creed’s old days in the Charred Ones. The main frame was too big for you, but you managed to protect your shoulders, arms, waist, and lower legs with it. You have two knives, a longbow with a quiver full of arrows, and a few new bags.

Yesterday the village held a ceremony to salute the three men that died defending the village. After traveling alone for months, it was somewhat awkward to be around this many people. Changelings don’t feel the same feelings humans do, too - which made it a bit harder.

But it was over quickly, and you managed to make some assessments together with Creed and the elders and veterans in Sund. While you are still alien and a complete foreigner to them, they have realized you have way more experience in combat, feuds, and subterfuge.

The brigands you helped neutralize must have reached Cendalar by now, escorted by a few men from Sund. The Charred Ones will be soon notified of what happened, as well as of your presence in the village. You have asked for them to send reinforcements, and they are likely to send a few trained men your way. But it’s going to take them at least another day to get here, possibly more.

On the other hand, the brigands at the encampment must be on high alert now that their fellows haven’t come back from the raid. They could be grouping up, and they will surely send a few scouts.

What do you do?

Wait for the Charred Ones in Sund. You can help with guarding the perimeter and setting up a watch schedule.

Scout the area around Sund yourself. You are hoping to catch the enemy scouts before they can report back.

Go scout the brigands encampment. Better to beat them to it, and be ready for when the Charred Ones will group up with the townsfolk in Sund.

Vote on Patreon until July 26th, 2026.
